From IT to IB PYP Teacher: A Career Change Story at Oakridge Mohali

  • 25 July 2025

Discover how a career shift from IT to teaching at Oakridge International School Mohali led to a fulfilling journey in IB PYP and early childhood education.

The most positive transformations in life often begin in the most unexpected ways. I never imagined I would trade the structured, analytical world of IT for the dynamic, curiosity-driven environment of IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) learners. Yet, stepping into the vibrant classrooms of Oakridge International School, Mohali—a leading international school in Mohali—has been one of the most fulfilling choices of my life.

From Codes and Deadlines to Curiosity and Discovery

My career began in Information Technology, working in a demanding corporate environment. My days were governed by KPIs, deadlines, and long hours in front of a screen. It was a safe and secure path—but deep inside, I felt unfulfilled.

Yes, I was solving technical problems. But I wasn’t making the kind of real-world impact that changes lives on an emotional or developmental level.

Lockdown: An Unexpected Pause with Purpose

During the global lockdown, like many parents, I found myself supporting my child’s online learning. Initially, I was just managing devices, organizing resources, and offering reminders. But soon, something shifted.

The IB PYP virtual classes were captivating. Teachers brought lessons alive through stories, visuals, real-life objects, and even kitchen tools. One day the children explored the solar system; another day, they measured ingredients to learn math. Learning was immersive, hands-on, and full of wonder.

It made me realise:

This is what true education should be—joyful, inquiry-based, and meaningful.

The Calling That Grew Louder

This experience sparked a deeper reflection. What started as passive curiosity grew into an active calling. I began researching the IB curriculum in India, joined forums for educators, enrolled in early childhood education training, and participated in webinars led by IB PYP teachers.

With each step, I felt more connected to a new purpose—not just to support my child’s learning, but to become part of something larger: helping shape the future of many young minds.

This was more than a career change from IT to teaching. It was a personal transformation.

From IT Professional to IB PYP Educator in Mohali

Today, I’m proud to be a part of Oakridge International School, Mohali, where I teach in the IB Primary Years Programme. This prestigious international school in Mohali has given me the platform to inspire and grow alongside the next generation of learners.

My students—tiny explorers, thinkers, and storytellers—are now my team. Every day is filled with laughter, questions, discoveries, and quiet moments of reflection.

We celebrate the little things: tying shoelaces, expressing gratitude, and asking “why.” These moments carry more value than any corporate metric ever could.

And yes, my IT background still adds value. I incorporate digital storytelling, use tech tools to document student learning, and design interactive presentations. But it’s the emotional connection—seeing children thrive in a safe, nurturing space—that truly defines my journey.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Transitioning from a corporate IT job to becoming an IB educator in India was not easy. It involved uncertainty, learning from scratch, and leaving behind a familiar identity.

But in return, I gained purpose, joy, and meaning.

If someone had told me five years ago that I’d find fulfilment teaching early childhood education in Mohali, I wouldn’t have believed them.

Today, I stand proud—not of what I left behind, but of what I’ve found: a deeper connection to who I truly am and the impact I was always meant to make.
