How Oakridge Supports Both Achievement and Wellbeing in Meaningful Ways
- 30 July 2026
Academic excellence and student wellbeing are often discussed as separate priorities. In reality, the strongest learning environments recognise the connection between the two. Students are more likely to engage deeply in learning and make thoughtful decisions when they feel safe, supported, and confident in themselves. At Oakridge International School Gachibowli, supporting both achievement and wellbeing in meaningful ways is an important part of how students are prepared for success in school and beyond.
As the Principal, Ms Dipika Rao says, “Student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do, and I see it as comprising three interconnected dimensions: physical wellbeing, emotional and mental wellbeing, and what I would call spiritual wellbeing. Together, these create an environment where every child feels safe, supported and empowered to thrive.”
Physical wellbeing begins with creating a safe and secure environment for learning. The school’s campus, procedures, and practices are designed with student safety in mind, supported by annual health, safety, safeguarding training for staff and regular emergency preparedness drills. Educational visits are also guided by rigorous risk assessment processes.
Dedicated homeroom sessions, circle time, and age-appropriate wellbeing programmes allow students to explore topics that are relevant to their stage of development, including peer relationships, resilience, bullying prevention, identity, and adolescence. Counsellors are available to support students when needed. At the same time, Designated Safeguarding Leads from both academic and operational teams help ensure concerns are addressed appropriately and in the best interests of students.
A clear well-being support structure enables students to access guidance when challenges arise, helping them remain engaged with their learning and school experience.
Ms Dipika Rao emphasises that wellbeing also extends to the wider school community. Staff wellbeing is actively valued because supported educators create stronger learning environments for students.
Parents naturally want schools to maintain high expectations while ensuring students do not feel overwhelmed. At Oakridge, this balance is supported through a learning journey that develops academic skills alongside personal growth.
As the Principal explains: “Academic excellence today is about far more than grades; it is about preparing students with the knowledge, skills and character they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.”
From the early years onward, learning experiences are designed to build curiosity, confidence, communication, and creativity. As students progress through school, academic expectations increase progressively, with each stage building on the foundations established before it.
A key part of this approach is the school’s vertically aligned curriculum, which provides continuity from the early years through graduation. Guided by the IB philosophy, students develop Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills through authentic experiences across subjects and year levels.
Achievement at Oakridge is not defined solely by examination performance. Students are encouraged to apply their learning in meaningful contexts that develop critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.
Experiential learning opportunities help students connect classroom learning with real-world situations. The principal highlights initiatives such as Trader’s Market, in which Grade 3 students designed, created, and sold products, then donated the money to support underprivileged children. Experiences such as the Deccan Bazaar similarly help students engage with history, culture, and local heritage in practical ways.
These opportunities encourage students to explore ideas, work with others, and reflect on the impact of their actions. At the same time, they develop a broader understanding of their communities and the world around them.
Parents who would like to learn more about how the school supports student growth across both academic and personal dimensions are welcome to continue the conversation with Oakridge’s academic team.
