Screens, Stress & Student Wellbeing
- 1 December 2025
In the era of advanced technology, we are evolving at an unprecedented rate. The question of how it affects our Mental Well-being has never been more pertinent. The way we work, learn, understand, relate, and relax is now related and intertwined with technology, software, and apps. From the rise of social media platforms to the proliferation of smart phones and AI, Digitalism has permeated every aspect of our daily lives, offering profound advantages and disadvantages. While technology and its advancement offer many benefits, it comes with a significant drawback that can adversely affect mental health, such as cyberbullying, online harassment, depression, age-inappropriate posts, and disorders etc. Research globally depicts that it can lead to some dangerous repercussions, especially for teenagers and young adults, as they are still developing emotionally and socially. The concentration span, cognitive abilities, and attention span in youth are decreasing, which is causing negative mental health concerns such as anxiety, headaches, depression, insomnia, sleep disorders, eating disorders, and low self-esteem, leading to the erosion of personality.
To find balance, we should follow the mindful practices and set boundaries, screentime, engage in face-to-face conversations, make a vision board, use graphic organizers for planning routines, be mindful of content and engage in valuable research-based websites, practise social media detox and seek professional help. As one of the leading schools in Mohali, Oakridge International School is keen to stay in focus on these issues of the digital age on the mental health of students. The school helps students to use technology responsibly and maintain emotional balance through the help of structured digital literacy programs, cyber safety awareness, mindfulness practices, and highly qualified counseling.
