From Playful Inquiry to Purposeful Learning : A child’s growth at Oakridge

  • 8 September 2025

The Milestone of Transition Every child experiences an important milestone in school life—moving from the playful early years to a stage where learning becomes more structured and purposeful. At Oakridge International School Mohali, this transition is not only a proud moment for the child but also for parents and teachers who nurture and guide them through this journey.

Learning Through Play

In the early years, children learn best through play. Songs, stories, dramatics, and role-plays bring classrooms alive, giving them space to imagine, explore, and create. These joyful experiences shape their confidence, social skills, and personality—forming the foundation for lifelong learning.

Embracing New Responsibilities

As children grow, the environment evolves. New subjects like French/Punjabi and ICT are introduced, daily routines become more defined, and responsibilities increase. While this may feel like a big step, the encouragement of parents and the support of teachers ensure a smooth transition.

Guiding Children at Home

For parents, this phase is about nurturing independence and healthy lifelong habits. Simple practices like allowing children to pack their own school bag, wake up on time, or reading together at home encourage responsibility. When school is presented as an exciting adventure rather than a duty, children begin to view learning in a positive light.

The Teacher’s Role

Teachers serve as the bridge to this next stage. Beyond academics, their role is to keep creativity alive and ensure children feel secure, curious, and motivated. Warm connections, buddy systems, and storytelling make classrooms spaces where purposeful learning and joyful exploration go hand in hand.

Strength in Partnership

The partnership between parents and teachers plays a defining role. Open communication and celebrating a child’s strengths builds confidence and fosters a strong sense of belonging in the learner.

Play Never Disappears

Even as learning becomes more structured, play never disappears—it simply evolves. Curiosity, imagination, and joy remain central, helping children embrace new routines and challenges with enthusiasm.

Reflection as an Educator

Having worked as an early year’s facilitator for seven years, I have learned that deeply understanding children is key. Observing their behavior patterns and adapting strategies not only helps guide them better but also shapes me as an educator. Each child brings a new perspective, and this constant learning keeps me evolving too.

A New Beginning

Every ending leads to a new beginning, and this one is special. As children move from kindergarten to Grade 1, with creativity as their armour and answers to their curiosity as their strength, these young learners step forward to lay the foundation of lifelong discovery.

At Oakridge Mohali, we celebrate this milestone with joy, knowing that our learners are ready to embrace the future with confidence and curiosity.
