Understanding Your Child’s Learning Style : A Guide to Parents

  • 27 July 2023

As parents, we often wonder how our children will learn the best. We try to understand their pattern of absorbing information. Similarly, as teachers even we at Oakridge always analyse children’s effectiveness to learning methods. We Understand child’s learning style whether it is through listening, reading, or hands-on activities and support their educational journey by creating an environment that maximizes their potential.

Let’s help you understand and identify your child’s primary learning style.

The Three Primary Learning Styles

Children have three core learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic. Each style represents a different way in which they process and retain information. Let’s explore these styles in more detail to gain a deeper understanding.

Auditory Learners: Learning Through Listening

Auditory learners absorb information best through the sense of hearing. They prefer listening to the teacher explaining and understanding the concept rather than writing it down.

At Oakridge, we have various auditory activities like sound sorting, Clapping the syllable etc through which children gain an understanding of the concept through sound.

If your child is an auditory learner here is how you can support them during their educational journey.

  • Provide them with opportunities to engage in oral activities and discussions.
  • Encourage them to ask questions and participate in group conversations.
  • Let them read aloud they may benefit from it.
  • Create a quiet environment that minimizes distractions when an auditory learner needs to concentrate.
Visual Learners: Learning Through Seeing

Visual learners absorb and recall information best through visual stimuli. They prefer seeing diagrams, charts, images, and visually appealing materials. These learners often enjoy reading and benefit from taking notes while studying.

At Oakridge, we have various visual activities like picture story, memorise the object etc and have audio visual interactive panels installed in each classroom through which various activities are performed.

If your child is a visual learner here is how you can support them during their educational journey.

  • Provide them with visually stimulating materials.
  • Encourage them to take notes while studying and create their own visual representations, such as mind maps or flashcards.
Kinesthetic Learners: Learning Through Doing

Kinesthetic learners absorb information best through physical activities, movement, and hands-on experiences. They learn by doing, touching, manipulating objects, or being actively engaged in their learning process.

At Oakridge, we have various hands-on activities which give children hands on experience or practical experience of their theoretical subject. Not just that a lot of Field Trips, Excursions, Internships are also organised to benefit children.

If your child is a Kinesthetic learner here is how you can support them during their educational journey.

  • Provide them with opportunities for physical movement and hands-on activities.
  • Let then study in unconventional positions, such as lying on the floor or bed they may benefit from it.
  • Create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that will help them thrive.

If your child is an auditory learner, it doesn’t mean that he or she cannot learn in visual or kinesthetic ways or vice versa. It means majority of your child’s learning happens in auditory manners and the rest of the methods help them to grasp a deeper understanding of the concept. That is the main reason why at Oakridge all three learning styles are given utmost importance and all the concepts are taught in the three methods.

Now that you know what the learning styles here are some qualities that will help you to identify them. Observe your child’s learning methods and help them develop an environment which best suits for their learning at home.
