The Power of Questions: How Young Learners Begin Their IB Journey
- 18 March 2026
The foundation of a child’s future is built in the earliest years. At Oakridge International School, we believe these years should be filled with curiosity, confidence, and joy—making them truly extraordinary.
In the Early Years Programme (EYP), learning begins with a simple question. As an IB teacher, I often find that the most meaningful moments in the classroom come not from the answers I give, but from the questions my students ask.
Their curiosity becomes the driving force behind every inquiry, every discovery, and every joyful learning experience.
The IB philosophy encourages children to explore the world with curiosity and wonder. Even our youngest learners—just three, four, or five years old—are natural inquirers.
They ask questions about:
These small yet powerful questions form the foundation of their IB learning journey.
In our EYP classrooms, questions are never dismissed—they are celebrated.
When a child asks, “Why do leaves change colour?” or “What makes the moon shine?”, we turn that moment into a shared learning experience.
Together, we:
Through this process, children learn that their ideas matter and that curiosity leads learning.
When children feel safe asking questions, they also grow as confident communicators. They learn to:
This strengthens language skills and boosts confidence. A child who feels heard is a child who is eager to learn more.
One of the most powerful elements of the IB is learner agency—giving children a voice and choice in their learning.
By listening to their questions, we design experiences that reflect their interests and natural curiosity. When children lead the inquiry, they become active learners rather than passive listeners.
As a teacher, it is wonderful to watch children discover that questions are powerful tools. They begin to understand that:
Most importantly, they learn that every question is welcome.
Our IB journey does not begin with textbooks. It begins with a spark—a moment of wonder in a child’s eyes.
The Early Years Programme at Oakridge International School nurtures that spark, helping children grow into thoughtful, reflective, and curious learners.
Every day reminds me that teaching is not just about giving answers.
It is about guiding young learners as they discover their own.
