The Magic of Early Years Learning: How the First Five Years Shape a Child’s Future

  • 7 November 2025
Each morning, when I welcome those little steps into the classroom, I picture how overwhelming and nurturing the early years truly are. Those inquisitive, bright eyes, tiny hands, and endless “why” questions aren’t just signs of playfulness — they are signs of growing brains hard at work.

The Power of the First Five Years

As a nursery teacher, I’ve seen how the first five years of a child’s life shape who they become. Research from the Harvard Center on the Developing Child reveals that by age five, 85% of brain development is already complete.
That means the foundation of learning, language, confidence, and creativity is built before a child even enters Grade 1.

These early years are not just about learning letters or numbers — they’re about laying the groundwork for lifelong curiosity and confidence.

 Learning Through Play and Exploration

At our IB Early Years classroom in Mohali, we don’t just teach — we nurture.
Our play-based, hands-on approach allows children to explore, experiment, and discover meaning in everything they do.

When a child builds a tower and watches it tumble, they’re not simply playing — they’re learning about balance, gravity, problem-solving, and resilience all at once.
Every “why,” “how,” and “what if” helps strengthen growing neural connections in the brain.

 Small Moments, Big Growth

One of my students, Poshikar, was shy and quiet during the first few weeks. Through story sessions, music, and role-play, he began to express himself.
The day he confidently narrated a story about a lion and a butterfly, his eyes sparkled with pride — and so did ours.

These little breakthroughs remind us that emotional growth is just as vital as academic achievement. Every smile, story, and question is a sign of expanding confidence and understanding.

 Rooted in Culture, Growing Global

In Punjab, we’ve always believed “bachpan di parhai, zindagi di buniyad hai” — early learning is the foundation of life.
The IB Early Years Programme builds beautifully on this belief. It encourages children to be curious, compassionate, and confident global citizens, while staying connected to their cultural roots.

At Oakridge International School, Mohali, our mission is simple — to nurture independent thinkers and joyful learners who see the world with curiosity and kindness.

 A Parent’s Reflection

As educators and parents, our shared responsibility is to give children the freedom to explore, question, and grow. What they learn today shapes not just their future academics but their lifelong mindset.

So, the next time your child asks, “Why is the sky blue?” — pause, smile, and explore that question together.
You’re not just answering science — you’re growing their imagination and helping their brain think creatively.

After all, the early years aren’t just important — they’re magical. 🌱
