Learning about organic permaculture farming

Senior students of MYP went on a field trip to Baby Elephant Farms to connect their Language Acquisition E-portfolio to real-life experience. The E-portfolio unit aims at teaching students to understand and respect the environment by choosing and eating the right kind of food – that has been ethically nurtured. They learned to respect the hands that grow our food, sustainability in our food habits and how food connects all of us as human beings.

The morning at Baby Elephant Farms began with a brief introduction that was followed by an explanation of different varieties of soil and how they affect our food. The students were also introduced to ‘compost’ and natural bio-enzymes. Watching the students listening attentively to the expert was indeed encouraging. The farm tour progressed with students learning about natural methods to keep the pests at bay and ensure a healthy crop of vegetables and fruit. Hopefully, this learning is only the ‘beginning’ of new-found respect for nature and natural ways to feed oneself.
