Supporting our students to excel and match up to their peers

These are unprecedented times, and we are all trying to adapt to the virtual mode of work, so are our children to the virtual classrooms. Sometimes they struggle to keep up and may fall behind. They may also face difficulty with understanding particular topics. It is understandable that in such a situation, children may doubt their own ability. To help children overcome such phases of self-doubt and struggle, a few extra classes and individualized attention based on their learning needs are very helpful. At Oakridge International School, we commit to provide such remedial classes to support kids who need it.

Our Virtual School Experience help kids in strengthening skills and finding strategies that play to their strengths. How? Let us learn from Ms.Pratha Keshwani, Team Lead of Secondary Education, Oakridge International School, Mohali.

Ms.Keshwani says, “There is no barrier to online learning for extra classes if the students, parents, and teachers are well-connected. There needs to be an alignment. For example, at Oakridge, when the parent experiences that the child is facing a problem in understanding a topic or a subject, they are encouraged to inform or motivate their child to inform the teacher.”

Oakridge International School hosts two dedicated channels for such extra classes for secondary students, namely - Technology Free Lesson (TFL) and Doubt Clearing Session (DCS).

In TFL, students can clarify their doubts from regular classes from within the past one week. For instance, if the teacher taught a chapter on Physics today, an online assignment based on the corresponding topic will be provided to the students the very next day. Students can then do the task independently by themselves. The teacher will send an invite beforehand and stay logged in on TFL, while the students complete their assignment. If the students get any doubt, then they may log in and clarify their doubts immediately. They can then log off from TFL once their doubt is clarified.

In DCS, students can clarify doubts from the syllabus taught till now. They can make a prior appointment with the teacher for the Doubt Clearing Sessions. These catch-up classes run from 2.15 to 3 PM every day. The child then gets access to the one-on-one customized session. The other students can also join the same session, in case the doubts are related to a similar topic.

These unique learning tools have minimized the teaching-learning gap in our online learning through advanced technology-based tools. Earlier in physical classes, learning subjects like Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics was much easier. In online learning, it was a little difficult for students to understand through PPTs and Slideshows. With our tools and techniques like Tab and Stylus, the learning process becomes easier for students. School additionally has a planned timetable where parents and students can initiate a doubt clarification class with the teacher. These tools have helped us eliminate the teaching-learning barriers from our Virtual School Experience and to make our virtual classes as effective as they can be.
