OAKMUN 2015 – The Bengaluru experience

The 5th session of Oakridge Model United Nations, was held in Hyderabad from the 25th to the 27th of September at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre. Model United Nations(MUN) is an academic competition in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. A delegation of 13 students attended OAKMUN 2015 from the Bengaluru campus. Most of them were attending a MUN conference for the first time. It was a mixture of nerves, anxiety and excitement.

We had students representing various countries such as Mexico, Libya, Lebanon, and Haiti. They were in different committees of DISEC, HRC, WHO, UNESCO, CSW and SPECPOL. Each committee had a specific agenda. For instance in UNESCO, it was education of the girl child and protection of the World Heritage Sites.   For 3 days students debated on issues of global significance which affect us all.  They had to form alliances with like-minded countries and write a draft resolution with suggestions and solutions to the issue at hand. This resolution was then put to vote among all the countries. What a sense of achievement it was for students when the resolution passed! Our students performed well and learnt a lot in the process.  Not only did they learn the technical jargon of the United Nations, but also the importance of listening, countering and fighting for your country.  The conference ended with a closing ceremony where the best delegates were given awards for their performance.

Special mention is to be made for Abhinav Krishnan for winning Outstanding Delegate and Niranjan Sridhar for getting a verbal mention.
