Verdantus 2018, a two-day event was organized by Oakridge International School Hyderabad on February 3 and February 4, 2018, at its Gachibowli campus. This was the second edition of Verdantus and Oakridge’s first-of-its-kind student-led eco-conference concluded with over 100 students from different schools participated in the event. Verdantus 2018 celebrated everything green and blue during its environmental conference as the students spread the love for our environment. Students come together, explored various environmental issues that are currently impacting the world. They participated in the debate and discussion to discover and solve the real-world issues related to the environment as well as to spread awareness to protect our nature.
These students from grade 6- 12 represented international committees like ENVI, UNEP to debate and discuss on major environmental issues. A few major issues like Ocean Conservation, Public Health, and Food Safety, Hazards of Nuclear Research Waste were explored. Student delegates shared their views regarding these issues on behalf of various stakeholders. These students help to raise awareness of how human actions are destroying the earth. After two days of intensive debates and discussions around these topics students provided some effective solutions to save our motherland, and came up with resolutions like implementing tax on companies and consumers to use plastic packaging, high-level waste separation should be implemented by nuclear research plants, developed countries should be awarded/ compensated for taking actions to with regards to deforestation and forest degradation. Adopting and implementing such resolutions will help us lead to a better, safe and an eco-friendly planet in future.
On this occasion, Mr. Arjun Rao, Principal of Oakridge Hyderabad said “Verdantus is one of the most critical conferences be housed at Oakridge international school. It allows students to engage with issues revolving around the environment and also enabling them to address the needs of the community. I am glad we are able to encourage students to consider such issues and extremely proud of their accomplishments.”
Manohar Nadendla, Ex-speaker of Legislative Assembly who was the chief guest of the conference added that “To have Verdantus 2018 at Oakridge is definitely setting a trend. This is a subject which is no longer for just policymakers. Students who want to give something back to the mother earth also come up with ideas like this and that will help us ensure to have an eco-friendly future.”
