Little Einstein learners sowing the seeds of experiential learning

Studies in plant sciences are grounded in concepts aimed to acquaint students with nature through experiential learning. Instead of diluting these concepts in a traditional lecture, we engaged Oakridge Einstein Grade 1 learners in the complexity of problem-solving and critical thinking inherent in addressing agriculture and natural resource issues. We build the foundation of experiential learning in connection to the Unit 4 Plants.

Oftentimes through the use of field trips, we engage students in experiential learning. Because field trips are not just a visit-and-observe activity, but rather engaging, stimulating, educative experiences. Here, we brought all the elements to the classroom and involved them in observing the nature of plants. The little learners inquired the needs of the plant to grow. They were connected to the facts by conducting an experiment with four pots strategy. This helped them showing that the plant needs air, water, soil and sunlight to grow.

This apart, the teacher and the students discussed what happens if one of the essential element is not available or excess of it leads to the dormant stage of the seed or it will not grow. With great enthusiasm and curiosity, children played a puzzle game related to the plant. As part of it, they have participated in an activity called ‘Sow a seed of love and happiness’ to spread awareness of the green and observed the sprouts and seedlings of Fenugreek (Methi) and chickpeas(Chana).

Field Trips

In connection with their unit, these little tots on a daily basis water the plants and observe the stages of growth of the seed to seedling. These also help them observe and understand the various parts of the plant as it grows big and produce flowers and sprouts. They also had a nature walk and brainstorming session in the class on living and non-living things. Well, this is not it. There is more to the hidden talents of our little Oakridgers.

They have made the ‘seed bombs’ to spread the green message which we can enjoy during Diwali and spread the green message to create a pollution free environment.
